THE Metcalfe family are very proud of the line-up of 96 bulls it will put forward in its annual Koojan Hills Angus bull sale at Manypeaks on Monday, February 27. The bulls on offer have all been bred specifically first and foremost with their commercial clients in mind.

Koojan Hills co-principal Chris Metcalfe said the stud’s breeding focus is always on phenotype and functionality while keeping in mind the traits which they believe are the main profit drivers - calving ease and growth.

This year’s sale team includes 54 bulls that have a below average birthweight estimated breeding value while 56 are below average for gestation length and 57 are above average for 400-day weight.

Mr Metcalfe said the sale line-up featured some exceptional bulls sired by Sitz Stellar and Musgrave Stunner. “We are very excited to be offering these bulls as we believe there are some standouts among them,” he said.

There are also some new sire lines represented in the team including Ben Nevis Newsflash, S Chisum 255, GAR Reliant and Texas Western Express N505.
“The sisters of these bulls are our best ever line-up of heifers which gives us the confidence to know that the bulls should be able to go into any commercial herd and breed outstanding daughters,” Mr Metcalfe said.

The Metcalfes will again offer six yearling bulls in the sale. These bulls are out of the stud’s top donor cows and by exciting new sires including some of the first progeny in Australia by Sterling Pacific 904 and Myers Fair-N-Square M39.

Like past year’s the sale bulls have been raised entirely on grass and have only been supplemented with oaten hay since the beginning of January.

This year’s bulls have an average testicle size of more than 40cm, have all passed morphology testing, are free of all known genetic conditions and have all been vaccinated for IBR.

The Metcalfes have never been more confident in their bulls’ ability to be excellent calf getters.

For prospective buyers wanting to inspect the bulls prior to the sale the stud will host an on-property field on Friday, February 17 from 1-5pm.
